University Centre South Devon offer a range of Health courses which have been designed to provide you with a direct route to becoming an Assistant Practitioner, Registered Nursing Associate (RNA), Registered Hearing Aid Dispenser (RHAD), and a Hearing Aid Audiologist, within the NHS or other health and care organisation.

South Devon College first FE college in the country to gain Nursing & Midwifery Council approval

Assistant practitioner

South Devon College are the first further education (FE) college in the country to have its Nursing Associate programme directly approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

The two-year course based at UCSD, part of South Devon College, provides a direct route to becoming a Registered Nursing Associate. After two years, students are also able to take the new Nursing Apprenticeship route or top-up their studies at university to become a Registered Nurse.

Students on the Nursing Associate programme at UCSD split their time between academic study, hospital and community placements, developing the skills needed to work within the NHS or other healthcare settings.

Memorium of Understanding with the NHS

South Devon College has recently signed an agreement with Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, becoming the Trust’s preferred training provider. 

The new partnership will provide meaningful industry placements for hundreds of health and social care students in the years to come. 

The partnership also provides placement opportunities for higher education and degree students studying on the College’s Higher Technical Qualifications.

Higher Technical Qualifications

Higher Technical Qualifications are either new or existing Level 4 and 5 qualifications (such as Higher National Diplomas/Foundation Degrees/Diploma HE) that have been approved against occupational standards in their sector.

These qualifications have been developed by awarding bodies, who have worked with employers and businesses to make sure that learners get the specific training, knowledge and skills they need for their chosen career.

South Devon College is the first college in Devon to have three of its healthcare programmes approved as Higher Technical Qualifications by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education:

Students at UCSD have access to cutting-edge facilities including a quarter of a million-pound, state-of-the art Healthcare Simulation Suite. It includes a four-bed ward with full ‘Nursing Anne’ simulation mannequins. It was designed to simulate a realistic ward environment which students are likely to encounter in the workplace.
