South Devon University Centre is part of South Devon College – The first FE college in the country to gain Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) approval

Assistant practitioner

South Devon College became the first further education (FE) college in the country to have its Nursing Associate programme directly approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)in 2021.

The two-year Nursing Associate programme based at South Devon University Centre, part of South Devon College, provides a direct route to becoming a Registered Nursing Associate. After two years, students are also able to take the new Nursing Apprenticeship route or top-up their studies at university to become a Registered Nurse.

Students on the Nursing Associate programme at the University Centre split their time between academic study and hospital and community placements, developing the skills needed to work within the NHS or other healthcare settings.

Partnership with the NHS

In 2023, South Devon College signed an agreement with Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, becoming the Trust’s preferred training provider. 

The partnership provides meaningful industry placements for hundreds of health and social care students across a range of courses at all levels. 

The partnership also provides placement opportunities for higher education and degree students studying on the College’s Higher Technical Qualifications.

Higher Technical Qualifications

Higher Technical Qualifications are Level 4 and 5 qualifications (such as Higher National Diplomas/Foundation Degrees/Diploma HE) that have been approved against occupational standards in their sector by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE).

These qualifications have been developed by awarding bodies, who have worked with employers and businesses to make sure that learners get the specific training, knowledge and skills they need for their chosen career.

South Devon College is the first college in Devon to have three of its healthcare programmes approved as Higher Technical Qualifications by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education:

Specialist, Industry Standard Facilities

Students at South Devon University Centre have access to cutting-edge facilities including a quarter of a million-pound, state-of-the art Healthcare Simulation Suite. It includes a four-bed ward with full ‘Nursing Anne’ simulation mannequins. It was designed to simulate a realistic ward environment which students are likely to encounter in the workplace.
