Students overjoyed with fantastic results on transcript pick-up day

University Centre South Devon (UCSD) students picked up their results for their courses last Thursday (14th July) with a mixture of emotions but all were filled with positivity once the envelopes were opened.

Caroline Brownhill, 47, progressed to FdSc Psychology and Criminology after studying Access to HE: Social Sciences and Sociology at South Devon College.

She’s now walking away awarded with the highest grade for her foundation degree, a distinction. She said: “I chose to study this course here because studying somewhere local is important to me, being a single parent. It’s a fantastic learning environment with lots of support.

“The course was really interesting; I have loved every second of learning and I was part of a great cohort.

“My advice to others is take each day at a time and just try your best. No one can ask for more than that. Stay organised with your work, it helps! And, don’t let anything stop you. I’m proof that age shouldn’t be a barrier.”

Claire Knight, 49, also shared this advice saying “no matter what your age, you can do it.” And she has done it, being awarded a first class honours in BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and Fitness.

“I chose this course to further my experience as a personal trainer, learn more about coaching, and to offer my clients a better service.

“The tutors and lecturers have been amazing; so supportive with everything, not just with academic issues. Over the last three years, I’ve never felt unsupported and during the pandemic they really kept us going!

Two students, Benjamin Simpson, 29, and Ben Cox, 38, from the BA (Hons) Leadership and Management cohort, that studied as part of the CMI Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship, also secured exceptional results with both being awarded a first class honours as well.

They both chose this apprenticeship as it was a great opportunity to progress their careers. Ben Cox, who is also the deputy head of student services at South Devon College, said he felt supported by the college to study alongside his role.

Alastair Wilson, Head of Higher Education and Academic Registrar, said: “It’s humbling days like this that make me proud of what we do here at UCSD. All our students have done exceptionally well despite the last few years throwing up all-new challenges we’ve never encountered. A big congratulations to all those that picked up their brilliant results, and also a thank you to every member of staff here at UCSD that goes above and beyond to ensure students realise their potential and succeed in everything they do.”
