Catching Up: Matthew Woodmore goes from Coaching to Firefighter

South Devon College were pleased to hear back from previous student, Matthew Woodmore. Matt had been a student at the College for many years progressing from a level 3 NVQ Diploma in Adventure Sports to a BSc (Hons) in Coaching – Outdoor Leadership.

We asked Matt a few questions to find out about his journey through College and what he’s up to now.

What made you choose your courses at South Devon College?

Having previously studied at the College at BTEC level, I knew how professional and attentive the staff were. This coupled with the quality of equipment available meant it was a no brainer when signing up for the degree.

What did you like about the course and studying here?

Lecturers are always so keen to help out wherever they can using many different styles of teaching to keep us engaged and interested.

What are you doing now that you’ve finished your studies at South Devon College?

I’m now working as a Firefighter in the London Fire Brigade. The skills I learnt on my degree have really helped me in this role. I use my coaching and teaching skills on a daily basis when undertaking training drills or delivering lectures to my colleagues.

Do you have a piece of advice for current students looking to get into your industry?

The skills I learnt are applicable to many different industries, not just the obvious path!

It’s great that courses and degrees at South Devon College really can provide you with skills that you can take into any career. Matt’s story is just one of many great examples of this.

We wish you the best Matt as you develop your skills further in your career and exhibit reassuring bravery in the moments where people rely on your help. We appreciate you getting back in touch to share your journey.
