Animal Science

The foundation degree (FdSc) in Animal Science is a programme where theory is rooted in practice with a strong focus on research activity and employability. The course will enable you to explore several areas of practice within the sector. As a result of our strong links with Paignton Zoo, part of your programme will be delivered within the zoo class room and you will have the unique opportunity to apply for a work experience placement. Paignton Zoo currently only offer these placements to South Devon College students and you can apply to within either their mammal, LVI, Birds or education departments or based at Living Coasts. You will cover the underpinning theories of animal science, animal health and welfare and conservation. You will be required to apply the learning from the classroom into your ongoing animal management and conservation practice.

Last term our students visited a farm of Dartmoor to learn about how sustainable farming methods can be used to support wildlife conservation and to gain practical farm animal handling skills. This year students have the opportunity to visit Tuscany to support the work of The Blue Shark Project. Other trips across the 3 years of the FdSc and BSc(Hons) have included Hinkley Point, Sequani Animal Laboratories, Exmouth Estuary for Avocet Boat Trip. Further trips planned for this year include Longleat and Slimbridge.
