Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training

We consider a variety of qualifications and relevant experience, and each application is assessed on its own merit. The general expectation is that you have:

• A minimum of a Level 3 qualification in the subject area you wish to teach in
• GCSE Grade 4(C) in Maths
• GCSE Grade 4(C) in English
• You should have a genuine interest in this subject
• Be aged 19 or above

If English is not your first language, you will need an IELTS score of 7.0 with a minimum score of 6.5 in each component (Reading , Writing, Listening and Speaking or an equivalent English Language qualification).

Six units are studied in total to make up the require 36 credits to achieve the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training. Units are spread across the duration of the programme and assessed holistically.

• Unit 1 – Understanding Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training
• Unit 2 – Planning to Meet the Needs of Learners in Education and Training
• Unit 3 – Delivering Education and Training
• Unit 4 – Assessing Learners in Education and Training
• Unit 5 – Using Resources for Education and Training
• Unit 27 – Teaching in a Specialist Area

This programme will provide you with the opportunity to undertake a minimum of 30 hours teaching practice. You will be observed for 3 hours of the 30 hours practice, which will form part of your assessment evidence. You will be supported with a placement mentor, as well as your tutor from the Teacher Training team.

The course is assessed through a combination of written assignments, practical teaching assessments, and a teaching practice portfolio.

We recognise feedback as an essential component of your learning and progression. We adopt a feed-forward approach whereby feedback is given in a developmental manner to support your continued progression. You will receive feedback on all assessments within 20 working days.

The teaching team is experienced with expertise and knowledge that are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. The team includes academic staff, professional practitioners with industry experience, and where relevant, technicians.

When not attending lectures, seminars or practicals you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. Typically, this will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library, preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for your lessons. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities, including the library, the UCSD Research Centre, and our course specific environments.

Your overall workload at Level 4 consists of class contact hours, plus independent learning, and assessment activity. While your actual contact hours may depend on the optional modules you select, the following information gives an indication of how much time you will need to allocate to different activities at this course level.

Level 4:

Lectures/seminar/supervision: 55 hours
Teaching hours: 30 hours
Guided independent study: 55 hours

Upon successful completion of the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training you will have the opportunity to apply to progress onto the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training and through completion of a bridging module, will progress into the second year of the programme.
