Course Overview

The Working with Children, Young People and Families Practitioner Level 4 programme has been designed to provide you with a broad knowledge and understanding in areas relevant to community and social care policy and practice.

As part of the Working with Children, Young People and Families Practitioner course you will become skilled in recognising and assessing the complex needs children, young people and families often present and support with any specific interventions or referrals. During the programme you will develop an understanding of the importance of early intervention and safeguarding work, allowing you to manage risk across the spectrum needs for children, young people and families. The course focuses on work-based learning and you are required to undertake a work placement to develop essential practical skills. Higher Level Apprentices will undertake 30 hours a week in employment, with an off the job commitment of 8 hours per week.

During your studies you will learn through a varied approach to teaching and learning, which includes seminar discussion and assessment, reflective video diaries, essays, reports and portfolios, all of which enhance your communication and presentation skills. All of our teaching team have a wealth of experience and maintain strong links with the industry. You will benefit from guest speakers, who will be able to share their experiences and provide you with a valuable insight into working practice.

As a student undertaking the Higher Level Apprenticeship, you will work towards the Level 4 Higher Education Certificate and on completion will be entered for Gateway for the End-Point Assessment. Upon successful completion of End-Point Assessment you will achieve the double award of the Level 4 Higher Education Certificate (Graded Pass, Merit or Distinction, awarded by UCSD) and the HLA Certification (Graded Pass or Distinction by our End Point Assessment Organisation)

Following this apprenticeship, you could progress onto the second year of the FdA Working with Children, Young People and Families programme, which allows progression to top-up Level 6 programmes in BA (Hons) Childhood and Youth Studies or BA (Hons) Social and Therapeutic Interventions to complete your undergraduate studies.

You could also apply to transfer to study programmes at other universities. After you complete your studies your potential job roles include; community worker, roles in pastoral care, youth work, psychology-focused careers, as a trainer or facilitator, or in family support work, family homes, youth centres, early years, youth justice, children’s centres, educational settings and the community.
