Course Overview
*Subject to approval*
This Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling is aimed at those who are looking to become a counsellor. It is a two year, part-time qualification which will give students the knowledge, skills and competencies to pursue a career in counselling. You will study one day a week over two years, and will undertake a counselling placement alongside the course in your second year.
You will learn about different approaches to counselling and how to integrate skills and knowledge from different counselling modalities to find the right approach for a counselling client. This qualification is underpinned by the Humanistic approach, but other modalities such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and other Psychotherapies will be introduced and learnt throughout the course.
You will learn about different theories and skills and will practice how to implement what you have learned with your peers in skills practice triads. You will learn how to practice ethically and within clear professional boundaries. You will be assessed through written work but also observation of your counselling skills. You will be taught by accredited, practising counsellors who are experts within their field and therefore, can support you with your journey to becoming a counsellor.
In order to complete the qualification, you must undertake an approved 100 hour counselling placement that is supervised by a qualified counselling supervisor. In addition, you must also undertake 20 hours of personal therapy which must take place during your time on the course.
Please note, you will need to pay for your own personal counselling and your own counselling supervision, as this is not included in the cost of the course. Some counselling placements offer free supervision, whereas others don’t, so this is something to be mindful of. We will support you with the work-placement process and will support you with finding a suitable placement.
Once you have achieved this qualification, you can apply for individual accreditation with a Counselling Body or Society, which will enable you to work within the counselling field.
The tuition fees for this course can be funded using the Advanced Learner Loan if you are eligible.
