Step-up to HE
Step-Up to HE provides the opportunity for you to explore new ways of learning before you arrive at university. It is an online resource that is designed to help you understand what studying at university really means. As you will discover, university is quite different from school, college or work.
Step-Up to HE will consist of four 30-minute live webinars. It is recommended that you engage in all four, because each one introduces new concepts and provides practical advice to help you get the most out of your time at UCSD.
The sessions will cover:
Starting in Higher Education – We take a look at some of the different types of scheduled learning you can expect from studying at university and how it may differ from your previous experiences.
Independent Learning – Becoming a successful independent learner is essential if you want to enjoy the university experience and achieve your best performance at university. This means taking responsibility for your own learning, your motivation to learn, managing your time and reflecting on your progress. This session looks into different aspects of independent learning and offers practical advice to make university work for you.
Skills for Higher Education – Advice on first assessments, how to use referencing to credit others for their ideas, and ideas on how to find your voice at university.
Computer Skills for Higher Education – In relation to being a student we look at MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams and the benefits of using MS OneDrive.
We are really excited about our new Study Skills page on the UCSD website which is available via this link. There is a whole section dedicated to your first year at university. We have produced some interactive resources that you can use to improve your academic study skills before you start. In addition to this there is a whole range of study skills guides which we have created to support your development of the study skills you need to succeed at university.
Enrolment will be taking place online over the summer term, once you have a confirmed or unconditional place.
Teaching and Timetables

The UCSD Research Showcase is an annual event which provides a unique opportunity to share research on specialism areas, it is designed to celebrate the scholarly success of students and staff. Last year our showcase took place virtually between the 4th-7th May 2020 which was a great success and saw many members of staff and students present their research.
As a key value of Higher Education, many of our degree programmes offer the opportunity to undertake first-hand research activity, so it is right that we provide a platform for discoveries to be shared.
Take a look at our Research Showcase webpage to view the videos from the week.
